4. DONDE ESTAS YOLANDA? played by THE ELCHO GRIFFIN with CHA-CHA-CHA DANCING!
This infectious song was composed by Peruvian musician Manuel Jimenez Fernandez & made popular in the 1960s by Afro-Cuban group Sonora Santanera & more recently by Pink Flamingo. This brilliant 29 note arrangement is by the marvellous Mathis brothers.
Yolanda, born in USA to Anglo-American & Peruvian parents, raised in El Salvador, become an activist, a scholar, a carpenter, airplane mechanic & rare book dealer fighting racism, sexism, & homophobia. But where is she? Do let me know if you know anything more about her in the comments below.

3. The Elcho Griffin plays SOUS LE CIEL DE PARIS with John-Francis Goodacre. Starring Prudence Goodacre. This was videoed on 8th July 2024 with the survivors of the 10th Quinquennial White House Lawn Party, Ashby Parva, Leicestershire, England. Sous le Ciel de Paris (Hubert Girau/Jean Dréjac 1951) is always thought of as a quintessentially 1950’s Parisienne chanson, yet interestingly it was ori...

In Feb 2024 Sandy McCracken and his team came to my workshop to make a short video documentary about my pipemaking. I was really happy with the video that they made, which was shown a few weeks later on the Border ITV ‘Border Life’ series.Incidentally, I keep hearing a rumour from other people that I have retired. This always comes as a surprise, because I seem to be the last person to know abo...

Introducing THE ELCHO GRIFFIN playing BLUE RONDO A LA TURK. At last, my Elcho Griffin is ready to be seen and enjoyed by the world! This wonderful street organ was made for me by Rob Barker. It plays the 27/29 note keyless music books which are used on most French street organs or ‘orgue de Barbarie’ as they are known. It has a total of 71 pipes: 5 bass pipes, 10 accompaniment and 4 ranks of 14...

This tune was an engagement present for Jon and Jane Swayne. After our wedding on June the 19th 1010 Pat and I had a warm and relaxing honeymoon in the West Country visiting friends and family. I captured the tune on our first night in Cardiff and the name came to me immediately. However, they had not yet announced their engagement and though most of us knew already; we also knew that we were n...

THE ELCHO GOBLIN plays THE PEANUT VENDOR

There was a bit of a ‘Do’ last night at my workshop which resulted in some outbreaks of spontaneous dancing to The Peanut Vendor played by The Elcho Goblin. It’s a brilliant arrangement by Kevin Byrne. I cannot imagine how he manages to get such a big sound out of an instrument that only has 20 notes, but he has! It's a triumph! The organ grinder’s appearance is somewhat pixilated, but I rather...
Golden Katrin- (my very first tune!)

My first tune arrived in June 1979 while I was travelling in Africa and I was staying at the legendary Golden Hotel in Cairo. A couple of months earlier in the Sahara oasis of Ghardia in Algeria I had taught myself to make penny whistles using old tin cans and Araldite. This tune is not very spectacular, but I was delighted with it. I did not capture another tune for almost 10 years. I named it...

The Elcho Sessions 4. MYRTLE’S MARCH. A tune for my sister Myrtle who was 89 on July 27th. The A section of this tune arrived in my head on the 25th when I was otherwise occupied, so I hurriedly recorded it and carried on with a busy day. I didn’t listen to it until the next day and very gratifyingly the B section emerged right away. The next day on her birthday I drove over and played it to he...

I want to learn to play the English bagpipes , if I was Scottish or had any Scottish blood I'd learn the Scottish bagpipes but i'm not sadly as i do love Scotland and the Scottish culture but I'm not one for appropiating others cultures and i am a proud Englishman . I do have a 16th Irish blood in me from my great grandmother who is from County Mayo so I do feel I have a right to maybe indulge in a little Irish appropiation lol . And I do love the Irish culture and bagpipes too . But I feel the English pipes is the way to go for me . i do have experience in music as an amateur alto saxophonist and can play fairly well .

@juliangoodacre Perhaps your question "But where is she?" is rhetorical, because your biography of the eponymous Yolanda is almost a direct quote from a 2010 newsletter article by Chon Noriega, the then-director of UCLA's Chicano Studies Research Center. Noriega wrote the biography as that of Yolanda Retter Vargas, former librarian at that research centre, who had died in 2007 but memories of whom the song had conjured up for him. This makes the Yolanda of the song even more enigmatic, but at least we have a stand-in.

Some things You mention are very familiar. There's a German word for what You do with the urine sample and dropper bottles: "zweckentfremden", which google falsely translates as "misuse". It's rather "bereave something of its original purpose".

Hi Julian, thanks for your videos. I've just acquired a workshop which is about 40 squaremeters which will be used for pipemaking only. Once it's all set I'll give you an update email if you like. I've also met a flute maker who helps me out with measuring pipes and who knows a lot about making pipy things in general. All in all my pipemaking journey is going pretty well. Thanks as always for your help! Yours aye Nelio (from switzerland)

Terrific video! I have always been afraid to heat my bagpipe seasoning in the microwave, however - it does such a spotty job heating my food that I am afraid I will be cooking part of the seasoning enough to denature it a bit and leaving the rest cold, so I heat it in a double boiler. I may be utterly wrong - that has happened before. Any tips you have to share will always be welcome!

hi i have a Persian bagpipe which is a sheep skin I think. I can not find any instructions on the internet about how to look after it also no teacher available. do i have to oil the skin from outside as well? sheep skin is not as thick as cow skin. can i apply your instructions to my bagpipe? when i got it in the post it was a bit oily and very soft but now is becoming so dry. I am concern that it becomes too hard so i placed it in a plastic bag. then i got worried it can become mouldy so i am keeping my instrument in the fridge until i get some advice.
